Brian Dougherty 1,172
Looking good. I understand the "It looks like it's just wrapped cord" feeling. However, when people hold it, you'll see them say, "What is this, leather?"
Rob Toneguzzo 792
On 10/18/2020 at 9:08 PM, Bjorn Gylfason said: I actually think it is quite hobbits as they are small and stout people that like the finer things in life and comfort so when they would find themselves in the dire need to arm themselves they might not see a reason elaborately engrave and pretty up a tool that doesn't really follow their life philosophy Well the blade part is finished. A lot of firsts for me but that is what its all about. I will make a scabbard for this one next. Anyhow I decided to take the above words of Bjorn into account and while I was originally thinking of some elaborate decorations as the build progressed the blade spoke and I decided to keep it plain. The story could have possibly unfolded like this...... once upon a time in a land far far away.... There lived a Hobbit. He was an uncommonly adventurous type and on one of his mushroom gathering excursions to the farthest forrest he happened upon a gravely wounded Knight lying in the shrubbery. The Knight, sensing that the Hobbit was an honest and trustworthy fellow divulged his secret quest to him and in his dying breath gave him his side arm (it was the only thing the Hobbit could lift) and entrusted him to continue the quest that the world as he knew it would ultimately depend upon. Thanks all for the advice and help on this. To be continued....... Edited November 1, 2020 by Rob Toneguzzo 9

Rob Toneguzzo 792
Today I decided to do something I have been putting off though wanting to do for a long while, give chape making a go. This was another first for me. In the end I found my cross pien hammer in the vice was a good little anvil to shape the two halves with. I still need to refine and sand the chape some more but overall I am happy with the result. It fits fairly well in the last pic but I will need to shape the wood down further to get a proper fit. I was thinking of heating the chape in the forge and hot fitting it. Kind of like burning in a tang. If anyone has done this please let me know how it went or if it might be a good or bad idea. I plan to make the throat next. Edited November 21, 2020 by Rob Toneguzzo
Alan Longmire 2,745
Looks better than my first three or four! Are you going to leave the scabbard plain wood, or are you going to put leather on it?

I would like to cover it in leather but I will need to source some more from down south. The only leather for sale in Darwin I can find is crocodile leather.

I love it. What metal are you using? I think that looks awesome. If you don't have the leather, I would just dye the wood as black as you can get it.

Only thing I had thin enough. I may just do that black stain. Got some leather strips so I may just be able to make it work.
