Brass case hardening?

As is instant liquid gun blue.  You can get the mottled effect of case hardened steel by degreasing it until water doesn't bead on it, then poke it with a q-tip dipped in gun blue. It will leave a multicolored dot everywhere you poke it.

 

Note you can't actually case harden brass, though.

I forgot to add, due to lack of sufficient coffee, that you do this with the brass still wet.  The reverse works as well, that is, wet it with the instant blue, then dab at it with a water-wet Q-tip before the blue dries.  

 

Both ways take some experimentation, so be prepared to do a lot of wiping it off while it's still wet.
