Hybrid design: Cable steel, bowie-tanto

Recommended Posts

This is a commission work based on a design that takes the shape of a tanto in the section cut view but has a clip point like a bowie in the profile view.

It is made entirely of welded cable. Stainless steel guard and pommel. Leather sheath carved with my logo.

You can visit this link to see the contruction details.

Holá Hÿllyn,

Pero que si, el doctor ha tratado de mi salud :) Olé

Fué un trabajo muy colaborativo en comunicación y gratificante :)

Funny when I meet someone who speaks Spanish I feel compelled to

write it, although I dare say I speak Castellano better than I write it ;)

Cheers

Love it, I find that I really like the patterning on the cable damascus pieces. I definitely wanna try it sometime.

Thanks everyone!

The cable was indeed rusted in some spots and also greasy. You can soak it overnight in a PVC pipe with degreeser. Then scrape the left over goo (for lack of a better word) with a steel brush. As to the rust usually the flux will take care of that.

Nice, as usual! What wood did you end up using? Looks almost like oak from here.

Very nice work. Do you find that doing a stacked billet from the cable gets rid of more of the cold shuts then just welding up the cable by itself?

The wood is bocote. Antonio wanted to have a dark look to the handle and I wanted to show the grain of the wood and not just have a lacquered finish. This piece of wood served both purposes well.

As to the cable, the answer is yes. If I cut the cable bar after the first weld into pieces, restack them and reweld them I can get rid of most cold shuts. I also changes the looks of the pattern in a way that I fine very appealing.
