Thanks all for the compliments.  Looking back at the thread, I sort of feel like I took up 3 pages of space, but didn't say much.  I'm probably too close to the material to see any value, but I am grateful that you guys think it was space well used :)

You can very carefully drive a razor blade between the spring and the liner and hope for the best.  If you do this on the pivot pin you risk losing the hidden pin effect. On the center pin, you risk cracking a scale, or leaving a visible gap between the liner and the spring.

I have done this a couple of times on the ones I made from non-precision-ground stock.  So far only one of the four was not salvageable.
