My first slipjoint Commision minor disaster and the ones that lead to it

Recommended Posts

i made the first one as a gift to my stepdad and melted silver from his mums old jewellery as the bolster which i engraved

Then i made this one and sold it within minutes of putting it up on facebook to a friend

Then Came this bugger, i was really happy to get my first commission to make a folder

i hadnt tried to engrave stainless before and found out the hard way that 300 series stainless is an absolute b"£$ard to engrave

and solder too

it took me 2 days of messing around to finally get the right flux after trying different recommendations

then when engraving it was so damn difficult i nearly gave up

persevered in the end and got something passable,

luckily he loves antiques so the engraving fits with the style and quality hes used to (at least thats my excuse for its slightly on the crude side look

I like 'em!  And I feel your pain on engraving stainless.  Any stainless, but 300 series especially.  I use Nickel Silver for my bolsters and I haven't tried engraving them, because I hate that stuff too.  Silver is the way to go for good engraving if you don't have one of the fancy pneumatic sets.
