Charles dP
Evening all. I’ve wracked my brains and applied my Googlefu but to no avail. Does anybody know how to make a wire spring handle such as those found on chipping hammers? Thanks. Jim Kehler
When I have done these I wrapped two spirals on at 90 degrees to each other. This was on a tapered mandrel, one at a time. Then the two spirals were twisted into line. This takes more material than you think. Hope this makes some kinda sense.
Charles dP
Yes, that would work. Thanks Jim. 1 "The way we win matters" (Ender Wiggins) Orson Scott Card Nos qui libertate donati nescimus quid constat
Geoff Keyes
I've always wondered about that g "The worst day smithing is better than the best day working for someone else." I said that. Welsh joel
I made one with just a oxy acetylene torch once. I had made a cattle brand from scratch for a friend. Just heated it slowly, little at a time and free hand shaped it as I went.
jacob beer
I would’ve said bend it on a wooden form, then fire it up!
Jonathanbradshaw
I have never made a handle like that but I have made a tapered spiral. Wrap the material tight like a snail shell and then pull the center out when hot. The handle would need two spirals to get the front and the back. That's the method I've seen illustrated in one old book. Back-to-back spirals, pull apart hot.
Charles dP
Thanks everyone. I hope to get back in the shop soon and give these a try.
