Blaine Whitney
After a hard day of Neo-Tribaling nothing should stand between a Tribsman and his Grape Smirnoff except the cap. It's actually my wife's. The handle on this bottle opener can easily double as a knife. The 9" blade is 1/4" 5160. Or something close to it. In it's previous life it was a meer boring lawnmower blade from the City Yard of San Bernardino Co. Ca. Plowshares back into swords I say! Handle is curing as I type. Edge goes on tomorrow. Nice Burn eh....I F*&^%$G caught on fire like a branded steer! It's all for the craft. Repeat like a Mantra. Blaine Whitney
The dark finish is Vegie oil I left on the blade as it tempered 2x. It darkened up just like an Iron skillet. It's a good looking dark brownish black. Handle is Black Braided cotton and Jute. Bob Ouellette
Nice knife. Looks like you combined two useful tools Unfortunate that you got burned though. Tim Crocker
That is a very cool blade Blaine. I really like the style of your blades. You have come a long way in a very short period of time. All I can say is if anyone likes your blades they had better buy them quick. I believe you are going to have a waiting period for your blades in the near future. You are one of the new knife makers to watch for sure. I've branded myself by accident a few times, but not that bad. That looks like a serious third degree burn in the photo. Blaine Whitney
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for the material Tim! I gotta figure out the sheath thing and move a few....they are going to stack up. That burn was so deep I really didn't feel it. Bottom of the palm right on the red hot piece of 3/" hex Cement Drill Rod as I was putting a twist in it. aaaAAARRRRGGHHH. Tribal scarring! P.Abrera
Cool, You've been doing some really interesting stuff! Digin' that oil seasoned finish, Never manage to get it as even as that. Nice!
CProkopp
Nice bit of cutlery, Blaine. Keep hammering. Not to sound all wussy and alarmist, but you'd better get a burn like that tended to. That's a third degree burn, and it can go south with amazing speed and no warning (Since you can"t feel it)! "I'm not anti-gun. I'm pro-knife." DGentile
Blaine, nice work... on both the knife and the burn well.. the burns can be a nasty thing if not properly treated... if you don't know how to properly take care of it yourself, swallow the pride and see a doc. it's nothing "serious" if treated properly... Most here, including myself had worse burns ... but don't take it too easy. here's what I do on the smaller sized stuff... - straight after the burn, cool it for arround 10-20 minutes. this will prevent the burn from "going further", which is important. - CLEAN it... now that's the important part... and maybe the most difficult to get right. No don't use any kind of standard antiseptic fluid... use something like "Ringer-Solution"... or any other sterile solution made to be used for Deep-cuts, burns or whatever. use a syringe with a short needle attached to flush it out clean. depending on how much skin is burnt, you might have to remove some dead, burned tissue.... but that's difficult, and a no-do-it-yourself if you don't know what you are about to do. - Keep it clean.... One of the most common problems with burns are infections. and that's nasty. - there are special dressings available to cover severe burns. - when it starts to "wet", there is some powder (don't knwo the english term though) to apply..., and KEEP it CLEAN. I've once had a burn on about 70% of my right palm... very bad... tissue was coming off, some flesh burnt. taken care of properly... and it healed back only with verry little visible scars... and the nerves are still intact/regenerated... but was a long route. And it did not even happen while forging, go figure. the spot you've chosen to burn, is not a "dangerous" place imho... and the actually burned area isn't large... looks more severe in the pic I guess... so with the right treatment and some care, it should not be a big problem. dan FERRUM - Daniel Gentile custom knives & forging classes http://www.ferrum-d.com

Alan Longmire
Good'un! :35: Looks like you've been taking Tai lessons. Good brand, too. Once the burnt skin flakes off it hopefully won't look so bad. I've had 'em as bad, but not as big. I think I'm happy with my own flesh sacrifice this weekend, dropped a sgain dubh blade into my leg while filing the shoulders. Oh, well. Gotta pay to play, and knives need blood. Alan Longmire
You mean you don't have your blades in a vice when you work on them? Thats just asking for injuries. 36997[/snapback] I was putting it in a vise, and the tang slipped right out from my fingers as I was tightening up the handle. The point stuck in my leg just above the knee, rolled sideways, and got hung up in my pants. I was actually happy it stuck there, if it had hit the concrete floor it might have broken that little needle-sharp tip off! I usually have that vise scooted back on the bench a bit so that couldn't have happened, but I had just been working on the sgain's companion dirk and it was too long to fit between the jaws and the bench. Didn't move the vise back before trying the little one. I considered the whole event to be a friendly reminder from the Gods to slow down and take my time, so I ceased blade work, had a beer and a pipe, and felt better about life. hammerdownnow
I would have guessed it was a burn from a piece of cable. Looks just like it. Nice patena, that finish should be fairly durable. How does the grape taste? I love grape soda. a liitle refresher with a slight kick sounds good. Archie Zietman
fantastic knife! I got a burn like that my first time at the forge, cept it was on my finger.
