Graduation Present

Recommended Posts

Been awhile since I've posted anything, but I finally got this one done. It was meant to be a college graduation present for my son, but it took longer to get it done than I thought. 194 layers of 80CrV2 and 15N20 done in a twist. Stainless steel guard and green and black G10 / stainless spacers. Macassar ebony handle and stainless pin. OAL 9.5 inches. Critiques always welcome and thanks for looking.

Nice looking steel. I love those soft twists. They look so fluid to me. Nice finish work on the handle too, although I personally could do without the sculpting toward the back end. The thick piece for the guard is also nice, but I would prefer it if the tail were much thinner. Just my preference.

You are at the point where you really need a maker's mark.

The only bad experience is the one from which you learn nothing.

Thanks for the comments and feedback. This was actually the second guard I made for the knife. The first one did have a much thinner tail and when I put it together it somehow just didn't look right. I then made this second and it seemed to my eye to look better, but then the thickness does look a bit out too. Guess I should have made a third of an in-between thickness to see how that went. Still learning balance.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I actually do have a makers mark and use it on everything that goes out of my house, but I still feel "conceited" using it.  4_IMG_2335.jpg

It's my initials (WAS) stylized. I tried using my name ONCE but SCHMALHOFER is a bit big to cram on a knife blade (even a big one). What I DO have to do is get some professional stencils. Right now I'm using the Brother P-touch laser printer label maker. The stencils are OK but if you etch too long they start to bleed.

that is a beautiful knife, and he will treasure it. He should, anyway. It obviously has a lot of thought and love poured into it.

I do prefer the thinner tail on the guard, but it is a balance. Some folks make the finger portion of the guard so thin and pointy I worry that it may hurt someone. I love this knife. I also love the sentiment/reason.

Aren't we all? It's a constant in this art.
