Not a messer for a change but a bowie wip

There's a makers challenge on the book of faces that got me out of my messer dominated dreamland

Started by going to the ever growing pile of half hammered things I forget about and found a suitably sizes piece

drew out a tang and shape a bit and then ground bevels. I usually like fully sanded surfaces but wanted to see how an as forged finish would look

I've never really bothered with getting perfectly square shoulders as I find it a lot less frustrating to file the bolster to shape

Walnut grip drilled and then burned onto the tang

Decided to add a little spacer behind the guard as it all felt a bit flat

Then a little bit of filing to make the brass more interesting

Peen everything!

Now I do like shiny brass but it didn't really look right on this knife. just a few drops of ammonia into the bottom of a container that I then hung the knife over and sealed did a wonderful job in a couple of hours to get this much better looking patina

Then it was time to make a sheath. the plan is a double layered leather sheath with a brass locket that might look pretty neat if it comes anything close to the vague idea in my mind

Inner layer cut out and overlapping edges skived down

Blade is oiled and then cling wrapped followed by a layer of electrical tape, that seems to give just about the right amount of extra room around the blade for a snug fit once the whole sheath is sewn up and dried.

Then I mould the leather around the blade and wrap it tight with cord to dry over night

For extra stiffness I then glued on two layers of 0,3 mm plywood on the front side of the inner layer.

That is now drying overnight and we'll see how it progresses in the morning

Looking very "moutain man" . Where was this maker's challenge?

“So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. I've been there before.”

The only bad experience is the one from which you learn nothing.

Over on 'the art of weapons' group

I wonder if I could use one that is already made and documented......

Wow I really like this one and the wip was great! Bowing to the master.jpg

C Craft Customs ~~~ With every custom knife I build I try to accomplish three things. I want that knife to look so good you just have to pick it up, feel so good in your hand you can't wait to try it, and once you use it, you never want to put it down ! If I capture those three factors in each knife I build, I am assured the knife will become a piece that is used and treasured by its owner! ~~~ C Craft
