A Revolutionary War Sword

Long time no see, but I need refuge from the banality of other social media. Again. LOL. So I got a commission outside my normal purview… and it has been a fun challenge. It is an inspired by for Norwich University in Vermont and the Smithsonian affiliated Sullivan Museum just over the mountain. The original saber was owned by the founder, Alden Partridge, and dates circa the Revolutionary War. I was able to document the original, and there are paintings of him with it. They will use the re-envisioned one for various ceremonies. It will be cast in bronze, gold plated and have garnet inset eyes. Wish me luck

Good luck! Looks like quite an interesting project. Are you doing all the casting? I've been casually interested in getting some sort of either centrifugal or vacuum casting setup. Looking forward to seeing how it comes together!

I have been seeing small glimpses of this on IG. My online presence has also diminished lately. Too much bickering and negativity on FB and no time to waste on that.

Bringing the tip down to 1mm thickness down the last 8” or so, then polishing up for etch.

 

Here’s a quick test etch. The original had evidence of layering, so I went with a pool and eye with a homogenous edge.

No, it is one bar of rando, but it looks like three in the pic because of the fuller & two flat planes.

Had this 4-5mm inclusion that was killing me. Could have lived with it… you never know when you chase them… but luckily, this time, I nailed it. No flaws in the blade now. Feels good. On to edge refining & polishing for the etch.

Calling that a day. Lots of minor details cleaned up, and all sprued up. I’ll think on the crossguard, and figure it out moments before falling asleep, when the backbrain likes to fill the rest of us in. I’ll invest tomorrow morning, hit the motorbike for an afternoon of investment curing & mental reprieve, and cast tomorrow night. Film at 11.

Many thanks. The original has a bit of an underbite as he’s missing some lower jaw, where he used to be biting a rather thin guard that broke. It has since been repaired at The Met, actually, but I like my more robust fellow. ;)
