Paul Checa 9
Hi all, I've got a problem and need your help. I was drilling through water buffalo to. Make a handle and the drill bit broke inside and now it is stuck. Any ideas on how to get it out? It's in deep. Edited March 11 by Paul Checa
jake cleland 721
drill in from the other end and punch it out with a bit of rod. Paul Checa 9
I can't because it's supposed to be one piece. It's a hidden tang knife any other ideas?
jake cleland 721
It would be easy enough to make an invisible repair on the horn afterwards - just cut a slightly tapered peg from a scrap of horn and drive it into the punch hole with a bit of black epoxy, the cut off the excess. Only other thing i can think of is to use a tube or dowel with a hole the same diameter as the drill and epoxy it over the broken end and use it to unwind the bit, but honestly this is when I'd go for a design change - butt cap, or simply a contrasting pin. 1 Jake Cleland - Skye Knives www.knifemaker.co.uk "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Eric Estlund 103
Potentially you could work it out with some deep reaching hemostats. Eric Estlund WinterCutlery.com IG @wintercutlery

Paul Checa 9
But what do I do with it?
Gazz 22
Heat the whole thing in your induction forge which will heat only the drill bit. The heated bit will burn the horn that is holding the captive drill in place so the drill can be removed easily. At least that is what I think that BillyO had in mind.

VaughnT 12
That's a pretty brilliant solution! I'm not sure I'd be allowed to use it since it seems too easy. Usually, I have to cuss, spit, throw the piece out the back door and start over from scratch. When reason fails...

Good point! ...and I actually have some information about that. In the past 9 years since I was introduced to them, I've asked this question about 15-20 times and I've gotten that response only one other time. That was on another forum about a year ago when Ed McCaffery came across a similar situation with a broken drill bit. But I never found out if my suggestion worked.
