Thoughts on these budget forges?

Recommended Posts

I fully intend on building my own forge to suit my needs in due time. After building my belt grinder and intending to make all my own tools im a bit wore out on big projects, especially if I can find a budget forge that is capable of forge welding for relatively cheap. I of course was taking a look at Hells Forge double burner forges, which are apparently capable of reaching forge welding temps.I do wish the burners were off to the side at an angle, but what can I expect for <$400. Has anyone got any thoughts or opinions as to whether these forges are a good start for a begineer?

Don't waste your money.

The ONLY cheap Amazon forge I've seen in person that is, in fact, worth even looking at is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Volcano-Hero-Stainless-Professionals-Blacksmith/dp/B0931992WL/ref=asc_df_B0931992WL/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=533317034586&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=151547123009100712&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013202&hvtargid=pla-1411121394605&psc=1

They also make a single-burner model that is very nice, but I'm not sure it'll weld.  With any of these, use the firebricks as doors, don't use them as floor liners. These come with rigidizer and Satanite, or you  can get some castable refractory like kast-o-lite 30 and make your floor out of that, and line the sides and top with a skim coat of the same stuff.  These are surprisingly decent forges, especially for the very low cost.

On the two that you found, the flame from the two burners does not form a "sweet" spot.  They form a hot spot that can decarburize the steel.  The flame needs to swirl around the forge not blow directly down onto the floor.  They're also up to the price where you can build your own.  Just look for some plans and use your imagination.

The one that Alan showed you is probably the best You're going to find on Ebay.  Just follow his advice on how to modify the forge.

As always, thanks for the info Alan. Im almost done with my belt grinder build (as long as I didn't drop the ball on my pro welding).  I think I'll pickup the Mr. Volcano, thats a very nice price and will allow me to fit on a big propane tank I have had my eye on. I'll take your advice on the refractor. Thanks again
