Jeroen Zuiderwijk
I came across this very educational video on Han dynasty bronze and iron swords, with fantastic surviving examples including hilts and scabbards and how they were constructed. Sadly I can't understand any Chinese, but the visuals are fascinating in itself. Jeroen Zuiderwijk
I'd very much like to learn more about how this was done, what materials and techniques are involved. I don't have the background knowledge though to interpret what I'm seeing. I do see textile wrapped wooden scabbards covered in lacquer, and cord wrapped hilts. But I'm clueless to further details. What kind of cord was used on the hilts f.e.? Is that silk or other fibers? Alan Longmire
That was fascinating. Almost like seeing alien technology as filmed by an overly excitable person on amphetamines... Some of those scabbards looked like there was no wood, just lacquered fabric of some kind. At least it does answer your questions about what the habaki-like thing is and how it interacts with the other elements of the sword. And the jade fittings! I loved those.
