Mike Jesensky
Hey guys,I have been getting by with my makeshift ways of filing shoulders and all else, but now want to get some hardened file guides before they go up another $10. I see two types, one has two pieces of metal and one looks like there are 3,I wanted to ask owners of each why one is or isn't better.as far as I can see from images maybe the one with 3 pieces could be held better in a vice while also holding a tang, any thoughts? Geoff Keyes
What pictures are you looking at? ' g 1 "The worst day smithing is better than the best day working for someone else." I said that. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly. - - -G. K. Chesterton So, just for the record: the fact that it does work still should not be taken as definitive proof that you are not crazy. Dan Hertzson
Recommend you get the type with dovetailed carbide faces.

Carlos Lara
The extra piece in the Jantz one is just where the screws attach. Otherwise they are functionally identical. I don't think there's really a pro or con either way.

Thanks Makes a big difference if you are going to use your file guide with your belt grinder. Now the second trick is to get a set of longer pins and clamping screws so you can also use it for integral bolsters. Joël Mercier
I've heard a lot of carbides pop off on the guides which they are just glued on. So I bought one with screwed on carbides. Also, here's a model made for integrals: https://maritimeknifesupply.ca/products/behnke-integral-file-guide
