Tangs and auto tempering.

This is my first post since 2017 and I have since then got myself a legitimate forge and started making real knives and not just adding handles to blade blanks. My question is after quenching a blade do I need to worry about the still hot tang that was not dipped auto tempering the rest of my blade? Should I leave thee blade in the oil till the tang cools or maybe quench the whole thing including the tang? I know that sometimes you want the tang soft so this seems wrong as well.

Leave the blade in the oil until the tang cools to low red (black in normal light), then quench the tang as well.  It won't harden from that temperature, and in fact will be easier to file or drill if you have to.  As long as it's below hardening temperature it's fine.
