Kyle Vance
Hey again! I just came across a source of 30 gal of free diesel, and am wondering if it is worth building a waste oil foundry burner to make use of it. I have not used waste oil before, and would like to know if it is a waste of time and money. I do a good amount of casting bronze and Al, and a proper foundry would be nice to replace the temporary charcoal foundry. i suppose i could save some of it for my jet engine. Alan Longmire
If you have a repeatable source for free diesel, then yeah, I'd do it. If that's a one-time thing, not so much.
Kyle Vance
that is what i was afraid of. are there any there used i am not thinking of that it could be used for?
Alan Longmire
Well, it'd run my lawn mower for a season or two... It's also a decent fast-quench oil, just a little prone to flashing.

Alan Longmire
I got that tip from JPH, just be aware that it WILL flare up in a big fireball. Just put a lid on it after the blade has cooled and it'll go out.
Kyle Vance
Hmm, sounds like a good use, I have been using veg oil, and am running out, so that is a good possibility for one of the buckets
Alan Longmire
I cannot emphasize enough about the fireball part. Do not have your head or any other body part or flammable object above or within a foot or so to the sides of the quench tank. It works great, but it's not something for idiots. You may be familiar with the fireball from quenching on Forged in Fire? Think two or three times bigger and hotter. But it won't explode. Just smells bad.
