  1. 1. What are we doing for 25?

    • Any one-handed woods-related chopping tool
    • Some other thing

It sounds like some kind of Woods related chopping tool is the choice.  Do we have other suggestions?  I suggest an end date of 10/31.

So, just for the record: the fact that it does work still should not be taken as definitive proof that you are not crazy.

I'd like to try again, but with my shop responsibilities and aging body, I can't promise I won't have to drop out again.

Knife In The Hat.  We pick a theme, we build to the theme, names get picked and they receive one of the pieces and their piece goes to another maker.  We try to come up with projects that cover a wide skill range and we build a community.  The piece I got is going to debut as a neck knife at our annual Blackpowder Mountain Man show this upcoming weekend.

It's fun and you are welcome to join in if you like.

We should have a signup post starting next week, I think.

I'm in the same boat! If I actually have a shop by the time the deadline comes around it might be a fun way to break in the space.

Work has been nil this year, I opted to fix my torn rotator cuff on the right shoulder. Post surgery and therapy would take me to June’ish and if work stays slow, I can get one done by October end.

I really enjoy doing KITH and always joined in before, so I’ll sign up for this time too, (with finger crossed!)

So, a draw knife is not acceptable?

I've been wanting to make another one of those......

I think a draw knife is right on target.

Not to be a jerk Joshua, but this doesn't fit the one-handed requirement. (I say this only because I would rather have done a draw knife too, but this KITH will force me to go outside my comfort zone and make an axe).
Perhaps this could be next year's theme?

Yeah. I need to make some of those as well.

You could make a scorp!  That's a sort of one-handed drawknife, usually used for things like carving chair seats or the inside of barrel staves.

Also for bowls and spoons.

It's not a rule so much as a guideline....

I got a bit hung up with bronze casting lately. So I made a pretty nifty small hand adze from aluminum bronze (less than 2 pounds).

Would that qualify for the KITH? Or does it have to be made from steel? I peened the edge and it should be capable of chopping some wood.

The handle is laminated from California Mountain Mahogany (or maybe from Utah?) and a maple core.

It took a bit of unusual effort to keep the fragile 2-part plaster mold together when casting.

Agreed!  We never said it had to be steel, after all.

O.K., thanks! Then this is my official KITH entry. I know I am a bit early.

The investment plaster mold was destroyed after casting but I still have the wooden pattern for the two mold halves. Maybe I cast two more adze heads for myself and as a present for a friend. I know it is more decorative than a practical wood working tool but it sure looks pretty.

Next time I will try making the mold from refractory cement and hope it holds up better than the plaster.
