I've been working on a few kitchen knives for the upcoming show this month and tried a little etching on one of the smaller blades today. I did two 10-minutes vinegar etches, followed by a 10-minute FeCl etch. I probably could have gotten more activity from a finer grit and more etching, but here it is.

“So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. I've been there before.”

The only bad experience is the one from which you learn nothing.

Here is all 5 I have been working on. All are 1095 clayed with Rutlands Furnace Cement. Blades are approximately 6-8 inches long.

My first knife that is worthy of a handle. Didn’t know what I was getting into when I decided to do a hamon with 1095. Its a lot of work but it’s worth it. Reminds me of dark rain clouds in this pic. Thanks to people in forums like this I had a clue.

Here's another one, in 26c3 this time. The steel is a bit more shallow hardening than I expected. The hamon showed up lower than my clay with a spot pretty close to the edge. Probably too much atp-641 on that area. I had also lowered the aus temp by a few degrees and it could be the culprit.

A bit more work will be required to clean some areas I believe.

Greetings All,

This was my first attempt at a hamon, from January this year -  a 1095 boner with stabilised Swamp Kauri scales.

I was pretty happy with the outcome but will change things up a bit next time to hopefully get more activity.

I think that came out great looking. I wouldn't worry about that spot by the edge. The steel will still get plenty sharp. Where do you get that 26c3?

AKS, but they don't stock thicknesses useful for forging . It's probably a bit tricky to forge anyway...
