Saw an article in the New York Times, didn't know how many here read it.

Here's the link...

Shoes are a "luxury", and they have no accidents. And they're thankful for their jobs.

edit: found a link to a narrated photo tour of the plant.

Time to quit mumbling about my own complaints, I suppose.

At the Shakti Industries foundry, “there are no accidents, never ever. Period,” Mr. Modi said. “By God’s will, it’s all fine.”

Man. I wish my job was that safe. <_<

"As if it was completely normal, he just doused the flames by rubbing the burning part of the cloth against the rest of it with his hand, then continued to cart the metal to a nearby mold." (Paraphrased from the video.)

Isn't it great how muy macho those wimpy photo/design types think we are? Dang, sometimes I just let the fire burn a hole in my skin if I have to choose between a little pain and ruining a nice blade!

I do have to admit that while I prefer to forge shirtless, I really like having jeans and boots, and that picture of the guy grinding with the shirt wrapped around his head reminds me: I have to order a new respirator. Yeesh.

Nice photos. Not sure what I think about seeing "Made in India," stamped right on the streets of old New York Town... I think it'd be cooler if maybe they were made out of wootz.

Perhaps they are! What if you cycle them a few times and then etch?

Organizing a new smithy as I am right now (with thoughts about dust and ventilation and simply creating a good working surrounding) makes for quite a contrast seeing this.

It certainly does.

This brings me to the thought of how sandals, SANDALS are a big no no in most american shops:D.

Let not the swords of good and free men be reforged into plowshares, but may they rest in a place of honor; ready, well oiled and God willing unused. For if the price of peace becomes licking the boots of tyrants, then "To Arms!" I say, and may the fortunes of war smile upon patriots
