How are people locking the die plates in for the slide in method like pictured above? Does this require a screw or will a drop in pin suffice? Mine as of now just slides in, I feel a set screw of some kind would be best. If u did a pin, u have the potential that it may/can get bound some how and won’t be able to remove the pin. The a actual jack is $90 with coupon from HF, tubing is going to vary. If you have a local scrap yard or a welding/sheet metal shop nearby you can check with them. This was a really fun build, and the advice/knowledge on here defiantly made the whole process a lot smoother. I did add a pneumatic cylinder for the manual release valve. It was kind of a pain to set up and get right but well worth it. The return spring inside this particular cylinder was not strong enough to lock the valve into the closed position, so I had to add additional springs.Had to add yet another additional spring to help close the valve. Also added some aluminum slag shields. Mission success!! Tested it out on a Damascus billet. Squared it all up and drew it out! Thanks again!! I ran into the same problem with the return spring on the pneumatic cylinder not being strong enough to close the valve. I had been trying to determine if there is a way to adjust the spring tension. Wallace Foster Posted October 16, 2020 Share Posted October 16, 2020 This is great I already have the jack so building the rest of this SHOULD be fairly straight forward I have a cheap 115 volt MIG welder that I hope will work I do have a 220V Lincoln stick but my shop is not wired for it yet. Wallace Foster Posted October 31, 2020 Share Posted October 31, 2020 (edited) I started mine and I realized my jack is a 30 tonne and has a little bigger bottom on it but I can still make it work I think I have 8 ft of 1"x2" I can add to the side of my base to give me the extra area. I got a new welding helmet and I can now see what I am doing and I also picked up a stick/DC TIG welder and I have been using the stick for everything now and love using it. Here is the progress on my press I just need to weld the anvil base on top and bottom and tidy up the rest of the welds and hook up a something to release the air. I finally got “the” HF jack on sale and will build the press for myself. I want to add the foot press and I want to feather the pedal, so I can press and move fairly rapidly. Want type of foot pedal / valve is best. “Poor Man’s Hydraulic Press” input was very helpful especially on the Bimba cylinder but I still want to be exact before I purchase (and yes schematics explanation help!) because I know absolutely “jack-sheet” about this stuff Kind thanks to all! I'm not sure about moving rapidly with the foot pedal but probably 2 or 3 squeezes per heat. I used 1 1/2×3/16 square tube,top cross bar was 1/2×2 flat bar.I tried to leave the top removable but kept breaking bolts. After welding the top cross bar on I had no more problems. Here are some of my dies and you can see what I connected to the pressure release. My problem is I want to use the foot pedal to control all the action up and down on the press. Which means I need a Bimba cylinder with clovis coupling to turn the exhaust valve quickie to release cylinder pressure and down action occurs all with the foot pedal. Then using same foot pedal, go back up. My ignorance is 1) What foot pedal will work best as a “3 way pedal described pressing down to turn the Bimba and release the cylinder pressure (goes down). Then I assume you stop pressing the pedal and the jack (goes up.) HERE IS THE LINK FROM AN EARLIER POST IN THIS TOPIC https://www.spacmo.org/Press.htm I see the set up however I am total clueless how to hook one up…………is a 4 way pedal better suited?
